Super-simple cellphones aren’t a new concept, but there’s something particularly endearing about the design of Dutch handset John’s Phone. A slabbish block with a simple numeric keypad on the front, a monochrome display on the top edge and straightforward control switches on the side, it boasts up to three weeks of standby time and a bargain €69.95 ($89) price tag.

We labeled the whole Nexus One saga a “grand experiment” by Google. It was a unique test to see if a manufacturer (well, Google didn’t really manufacture the Nexus One, but I digress) could sell phones direct to customers unlocked. It was the best Android phone at the time and it was shipping with the stock Android UI as more and more manufacturers were going with their own UIs.

Huawei are another company going in for Android in a big way, already behind several of the operator-branded budget smartphones on the market and hoping to follow up that success with the new Ideos U8150, a Froyo 2.2 smartphone with what’s tipped to be a roughly $150 unsubsidized price tag. As well as playing with the U8150 at IFA 2010 today, we also grabbed a fleeting moment with the Ideos S7 tablet and a (non-functional) Huawei prototype for their idea of a potential gaming MID.
